frequently asked questions

Where does dog training take place?

Puppy training and dog obedience/manners training takes place in your home. We can also meet in local parks or the client's neighborhood depending on where the issues are taking place.

Dog behavior initial consults take place virtually and all follow-up behavior consults sessions take place in person (often starting at a neutral location like a local park).

I want to book a dog training package, how do I get started?

Schedule a free call above. We will talk for about 20 minutes and discuss your current struggles, your goals, and what package would be a fit for you and your dog. If we are not a good fit to work together for any reason, I can recommend other certified trainers who can help.

How often will we meet for training?

In your first session, we will schedule out the rest of your sessions together. Sessions take place weekly or every other week. Note that all package sessions expire after 4 months if not used.

What will I need for each session?

We’ve got you! You will receive a list of all you’ll need to prep for your session before each appointment. In general, you will need: A bag of high value treats, a wearable treat pouch, your dog’s leash, collar, and harness.

I just purchased a dog training package, now what?

Congratulations! We are so excited to get started on helping you live a better life with your dog.

Once your payment has been received we will send a confirmation of your initial appointment. You will also receive a link to fill out an intake form ahead of the initial appointment. Please contact  michelle@modernmannersdogtraining.com if you need assistance.

What is your service area?

We offer dog training in York, PA, Marietta, PA, Dover, PA, Lancaster PA and all other towns 35 minutes from West York, PA. If you are more than 35 minutes from West York, PA we may still be able to work together for an additional travel fee. Please fill out the contact form above to inquire.

My dog is aggressive, can you help?

Yes. Aggression to people occurs because dogs are fearful. In training, we will teach your dog that the people they fear are safe and predict good things for them.

My dogs are fighting with each other, can you help?

Our areas of focus are reactivity to dogs on walks or people, fear of strangers (aggression to strangers), manners, and puppy training. We do not currently take inter-household dog aggression. But please contact us, we can recommend a wonderful trainer who can help!

My dog and cat are not getting along, can you help?

Dog-cat cohabitation training is a specialty. Please contact my colleague, Naomi Rottenberg of Praiseworthy Pets. She is a certified trainer who specializes in dog-cat cohabitation and can help.

I am currently using an ecollar, can we still work together?

Yes, we are happy to work with clients who have used ecollars, prong collars, vibrating collars, or other training methods in the past. This is a judgement free zone. However, in order for us to work together, you must cease use of those items. We use food rewards in training and use positive reinforcement, force-free dog training methods exclusively.

Do you offer board and train?

We do not offer board and train. Currently, there are no positive reinforcement and force-free board and train programs in York county, PA or in the surrounding areas. If your dog is struggling with aggression, fear, reactivity or other unwanted behavior you are best served working with a positive reinforcement force-free trainer who will meet with you for private 1:1 sessions.

Keep in mind that if your dog goes to board and train, you cannot see what the trainer is doing with your dog. You may not be comfortable with the methods used but will not be present to intervene.  Also, even if your dog has been boarded for a vacation before, boarding in a training facility kennel is often extremely stressful for dogs. Especially dogs with fear, aggression, reactivity etc. Click here to view what veterinarians at Penn Vet Behavior recommend when looking for a trainer.
